Day 77: Hazel & Haircuts

Location: Redmond, WA

Our first order of business today was to stop at the nearby FedEx store so Julia could ship off another application. From there, we went back to the Brown Bag for breakfast. The place was packed, but it was worth it since the food is great. After breakfast, we made a quick stop at the Mac Store in the Redmond Town Center, but apparently a Mac Store isn’t good enough to exchange my iPod headphones, we need to go to an Apple Store, the nearest of which is in Bellevue. We then went to get haircuts.

Since I am lazy and do not shave every day, the woman cutting my hair decided to take the opportunity to shave some horrible pattern into my face. It’s nice to have short hair again, though. Julia had her hair cut as well, but is going to a different place next week for some sort of treatment I know nothing about because I’m not a girl.

After out haircuts, we brought Data back to the dog park.  We spent about two hours there, during which he was able to play with a whole bunch of dogs, all of which were very friendly and playful, so he had a great time.  Then, we came back to Jeff and Shalena’s, where we hung around talking for a while. We ordered some really good pizza from Jet City Pizza and, later, went out to pick up some ice cream from Cold Stone.

Tomorrow, we are going to wake up early and call Mount Rainier National Park and North Cascades National Park. If one of the parks has good weather, we are going to take a day trip there. If neither of them have good weather, we are going to head into downtown Seattle to look around. Either way, we should have a busy day and a lot of photos to show for it by the end of it.

Here is a photo from today.

Day 76: The Kingdom

Location: Redmond, WA

We slept in today, a nice treat since we had been sleeping in the car for the last few days.  After gathering our thoughts, we decided to take it easy today.  First, we brought Data back to the off-leash park in downtown Redmond.  We spent about an hour there.  Although it was gloomy and raining from time to time, there were still a lot of people at the park, so he was able to run, swim and play non-stop the whole time.

From the park, we returned to Jeff and Shalena’s for a bit before heading out again to get dinner and see a movie.  We ate at the same Mexican restaurant we went to when we were here before heading to Vancouver, and it was great once again.  Feeling stuffed, we killed some time walking around the Redmond Town Center, which is basically a big outdoor mall.  We bought the DVD of Knocked Up, a movie that both Julia and I loved, which will certainly come in handy if we are stranded in some small town somewhere and need something to do.

We saw the 8:40 p.m. showing of The Kingdom.  Julia had been looking forward to it for a long time, so it was nice to finally be able to see whether or not it would live up to her expectations.  She liked it, I thought it was alright.  I think my problem is that I don’t like movies that use current events to drive the plot.  I don’t mind movies that depict current events as long as the plot can stand on its own.  It wasn’t a bad movie, I just didn’t think it was good.

Upon returning, Jeff, Shalena, Julia, Hazel and I watched Knocked Up, which Jeff and Shalena hadn’t seen before (they both liked it).  Now, Julia and Data are sleeping and I am about to do the same.

I don’t know what our plan is tomorrow, but I do know that we will have a busy time for the next few days.  We would like to see Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park, possibly Olympic National Park and the city of Seattle before leaving Redmond.

Day 76: Contest Submissions

Location: Redmond, WA

Just a quick update.  I submitted my photos to the photo contest I had originally mentioned in this post.

The wildlife shot was an easy choice, but it was difficult to choose a landscape.  In the end, I submitted these two photos:

Bison on the prairie

Bison at Badlands National Park.  I made some minor color and shadow detail adjustments, so this is the updated version.

Great Fountain Geyser at sunset

Great Fountain Geyser at Yellowstone National Park.  I made some very minor adjustments to this one as well, so this is the updated version.

Day 75: To-Do List

Location: Redmond, WA

We are now back in Redmond and ready to pass out, but a quick post is in order before we do so.

We had dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory, which I just now discovered is a big chain of restaurants.  I preferred the idea that it was an independent establishment.  Regardless, the food was good.

After dinner, we drove to the ferry docks.  Since the 9 p.m. ferry is the last one for the day, it was fairly empty, which was nice.  The ride itself went smoothly.

Once we got back on the road, we headed for the U.S. border.  We had been given a hard time by customs upon entering Canada, so we weren’t exactly excited about entering the U.S. again.  When we got to the border, the entire amount of time we spent answering questions and passing through customs was less than 30 seconds.  We know this because we had paused the Sirius and we could tell how many seconds had been spent with no signal – the time we had been under the canopy at the customs booth.  It was amazing how fast and easy it was for us to come back into the country considering how difficult it was to get out and how many horror stories we had heard.

In any case, the drive was easy and we arrived here in Redmond at roughly 1:30 a.m.  Jeff and Shalena had stayed up to welcome us back, which was very nice of them.  Now, Julia, Data and I are getting ready for bed.

Before I post photos, here is a quick list of things that we would like to accomplish while we are in the Redmond/Seattle area:

  • We both need haircuts.
  • Julia will post her photos.
  • Julia must submit another application tomorrow.
  • I need to replace my iPod headphones at the nearest Apple store.
  • I will call the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles to find out the status of my mail-in license renewal.

Day 75: Bugs & Fish

Location: Victoria, British Columbia

We picked up a few bagels at the local Blenz this morning on our way to the Undersea Gardens.  We were both underwhelmed by the experience.  It wasn’t really an aquarium, just a set of stairs that go down to the harbor floor and show you the type of marine life that live there.  There were a few octopuses (apparently octopi isn’t correct) and some nice sea stars, but it was generally boring and uninspiring.

From the Undersea Gardens, we drove the short distance to the Bug Zoo.  I love bugs, so I was excited to go.  Julia, meanwhile, hates bugs, and was not excited at all.  When we got there, we looked at the exhibits of different species of insects while the tour guide talked to a bunch of kids that were there.  It was my goal to get Julia to hold some bugs, and the tour guide delivered.  She held a hissing cockroach, some sort of leaf insect, a tarantula, a scorpion, a walking stick and some other mysterious insect.  She wasn’t thrilled with the idea of holding the tarantula or the scorpion, but kept her composure and felt good about the experience afterward.

After the Bug Zoo, we brought Data back to the off-leash waterfront area to play.  He met a cute golden retriever and yellow lab mix and a few other dogs that he was able to run around with until the point of complete exhaustion.

Now, we are sitting in a Serious Coffee.  We will get dinner in a few minutes and then catch the 9 p.m. ferry back to Tsawwassen and drive from there back to Redmond.

Day 74: Titanic

Location: Victoria, British Columbia

I woke up this morning to the sound of Julia sobbing quietly.  I panicked for a moment until I realized that she was still sleeping.  Turns out, she had been having some sort of strange dream.  From what I could tell, she was dreaming that she had been playing field hockey and suddenly all different parts of her body turned to jelly or something like that.  We had a good laugh about it before trying to hunt down some breakfast.

We looked at the menu at Frank’s Honey Bun Cafe, but they didn’t have much of a selection, so we decided to take the easy way out and go to Denny’s.  Neither of us had been to Denny’s in quite a while because there is a Cracker Barrel nearby in Connecticut, so we’ve never had a need.  It wasn’t great, but it filled us up and surrounded us with some interesting company.  First, there was the girl who was eating by herself.  My guess is that she was recently pregnant, but still likes wearing her pre-pregnancy clothes.  I won’t go into too much detail, but let’s just say that certain parts of her torso were significantly larger than the low-cut shirt she was wearing was designed for.  Second, there was the guy in the bathroom.  I went in to pee and he was finishing up in the stall.  After exiting the stall, he came over and stood right next to me at the urinal.  Then, he followed me out.  He looked homeless and sat at the counter stroking his goatee for a while.  Really strange.

After breakfast, we parked in the tourist area of downtown Victoria.  We first went to Miniature World, an attraction with numerous miniature displays.  There were tiny versions of everything from spaceships to the Civil War.  We went through quickly.  It was a fun time-waster and I certainly can’t begin to imagine the amount of time and effort that went into assembling the displays.

We then went to the Royal BC Museum, which was showing an exhibit of artifacts from the Titanic and an IMAX film called Titanica.  Upon entering the exhibit, we were given tickets bearing the names of actual passengers on the Titanic.  As we left, we were able to look up our names to see whether or not we had survived.  I was a second-class passenger who died, while Julia was a third-class passenger who survived.  It was interesting to see some of the artifacts recovered from the wreck in person and then to see them again in the film.  The movie was more of an account of an expedition to dive to the wreckage and one survivor’s story than it was the story of the Titanic, but it was still informative.

We had been thinking about visiting the Undersea Gardens and Bug Zoo, but time did not allow it today, so they will have to wait until tomorrow.

After leaving the museum, we wanted Data to be able to get a workout, so we brought him back to the off-leash area on the waterfront.  There were a lot of other dogs around, so he was able to romp for quite a while.  From there, we drove east along the shore until we got to Oak Bay.  We left the car and the three of us went for a nice jog along the beach before returning at just after sunset.

We then drove back to downtown Victoria, stopping at Subway for a quick dinner before a quick view of Craigdarroch Castle.  We then caught the 9:20 p.m. showing of The Brave One.  The movie could have been really good, but the ending ruined it.  Plus, Jodie Foster is too old for that role, I don’t like Terrance Howard very much and Sarah McLachlan ruins any and all soundtracks she appears on.

Now, we are back at Stain Cafe, which is closing in 10 minutes, so I have to wrap this up.

Day 73: Lucky Stars

Location: Victoria, British Columbia

Sorry about the hurried nature of my last post, but time was of the essence.

We saw the 9:45 p.m. showing of Resident Evil: Extinction.  Julia had never seen either of the first two movies before and I had only seen about 20 minutes of the first one, but we figured (correctly) that this wasn’t the type of movie that relied heavily on plot lines.  The movie was alright, nothing great, but not horrible either.

After the movie, we started back to the car.  When we came around the corner, we saw two police cars and a tow truck sitting right where we had parked.  We hoped that the Suburban hadn’t been broken into or some other tragedy had occurred, mostly because Data was asleep in his crate.  As we got closer, we realized that the Suburban was fine, but we were extremely lucky.

A Ford Bronco heading north had somehow come across the road into oncoming traffic and slammed into the cars parked at the side of the road.  The car that was hit was only one car away from ours.  It had obviously just happened because debris was still all over the street and the police were just starting to analyze the scene.  According to the barely coherent, presumably homeless man nearby, the driver was drunk.  That same guy also told me that he was going to “cut his brake cables for him so it would look like it wasn’t his fault.”  I took a few photos, but police officers generally don’t like it when bystanders are photographing the scene of a crime while they are trying to work (I know from experience).

We drove away and are now in the Stain Cafe, an internet cafe nearby that is open late.  We are going to go to bed shortly, but wanted to post about this incident first.

We were very lucky tonight, but at least it made for a good story and some good photos.

Day 73: Goat Stampede

Location: Victoria, British Columbia

If I rush this post, it’s because we’re leaving soon to go see a movie.

We slept in a hotel parking lot last night.  We’ve become quite good at freeloading, which is good when you consider that even if we had paid just $20 per night to stay at campgrounds, we would have paid over $1,400 in lodging expenses so far this trip.

This morning, when we woke up, we set out to find a cafe for breakfast.  We settled on a place called QV near Chinatown.  Their bagels weren’t very good, but the area was nice, so after eating, we went for a walk with Data for a while.  After the walk, we drove to Beacon Hill Park.  There is a small petting zoo there, so we walked around for a few minutes.  We had pretty good timing because just after we arrived, they did a “goat stampede,” which involved herding all of the goats to the barn for dinner.

Following the petting zoo, we drove across the street to the waterfront, where dogs are allowed off-leash.  Data spent time exploring, playing and trying to drink the salt water.  From there, we went back into the park and the three of us went for a jog around the grounds.  The jog was great for all of us and the park is beautiful.

After leaving the park, we drove along the water until we were back downtown.  We had seen an Italian restaurant on our walk that looked good, so we parked and had dinner at Luciano’s.  It was great.  I had the manicotti, which was even better than Anton’s in Vancouver, and Julia had butternut squash ravioli, which she liked.

Now, we are back at a Blenz, using the internet.

Day 72: Victoria

Location: Victoria, British Columbia

We slept in the car again last night, which has become very comfortable. Julia woke up before me and decided to go for a jog with Data, which was probably great for both of them. I used to run in the woods with Data every day before we left for the trip, so he was probably thrilled. We then went back to Blenz for a few before setting out for the day. Our first stop on the way to the ferry was at the Fritz European Fry House, which Chris had recommended to us when we first arrived. We had fries and a veggie hot dog, both of which were good, but not as unique as one would expect from a place that specializes in fries. In fairness, I think their specialty is in their dips, toppings and sauces, not the fries themselves.

After walking around the area and stopping for gas, we set out for the ferry docks. We arrived at approximately 5 p.m., meaning the next ferry was at 7 p.m. We spent our free time relaxing, walking Data and browsing around the little shopping area nearby. Because the Thule top put the Suburban’s height at roughly 7′5″, we had to pay the oversize rate, which was about $90 ($60 for the car, $10 per person plus tax).

The ferry ride itself was easy and uneventful. It took about 90 minutes and we spent most of the time in the car watching an episode of The Wire that I had downloaded. There was a pet area, but it was basically just a small room with concrete floors and nobody in it, so we just let Data hang around on the back seat. We also walked around the passenger decks, but since it was raining, there wasn’t much to see.

Upon arrival at Vancouver Island, we had one initial mission: shower. We hadn’t showered since leaving Chris’, so we both felt grubby. We tried to find the nearest campground, which turned into an adventure. First, we turned too soon and ended up in some coastal town. Then, we couldn’t find the turnoff we needed at all, so we ended up about 30 minutes past the campground we were looking for. Luckily, we stumbled upon some other random campground, where we happily took showers and refilled our water bottles.

After showering, we drove back into downtown Victoria, stopping at McDonald’s for a quick snack. We can tell the city is nice, but since it’s rainy and dark, it will be interesting to see what it really looks like.

We initially went to the Marriott to steal some internet, but their network was horrible, so now we are sitting in the car in front of Subway, which has wireless internet.

Tomorrow, we are going to explore!

Here are a few photos from the ferry.
